Record gameplay on Windows 11 with the built-in Xbox Game Bar: the shortcuts, where clips are saved, and what to check if recording won't start.

You don't need OBS or a paid app to record a gaming clip on Windows. Xbox Game Bar is built in and records to MP4 with a single keyboard shortcut.

1. Turn on Xbox Game Bar

Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar (or press Windows + I and search "xbox") and make sure Game Bar is enabled.

2. Record a clip

The screen flashes when recording starts and stops. You can also open Game Bar with Windows + G and press the record (circle) button in the Capture widget.

3. Find your clips

Clips save as MP4 files in Videos > Captures. The file name includes the game or app name plus the date and time. In Game Bar, "See my captures" in the Capture widget opens them too.

4. Include game and system sound

In Game Bar (Windows + G), open Settings > Capturing and choose the audio option that includes all sounds (game, mic, apps and system) if you want everything in the clip.
