Turn off 'Improve the model for everyone' in ChatGPT's Data controls. Here's what it changes, what it doesn't, and when to use a Temporary Chat instead.
On personal ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro accounts, your conversations can be used to train OpenAI's models by default. One switch turns that off, and you keep your chat history.
On the web
- Open your account menu (your profile icon).
- Select Settings, then Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone and select Done.
On iPhone or Android
- Open the sidebar and tap your profile icon to open Settings.
- Tap Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
When you're signed in, the setting applies to your whole account on every device.
What it does and doesn't do
| Does | Doesn't |
|---|---|
| Stops your new conversations being used for training | Delete or hide existing chats (delete those separately) |
| Applies to Codex tasks on personal plans too | Cover feedback: if you press thumbs up/down, that whole conversation may still be used |
| Keeps your chat history working | Change voice mode, which has its own separate training control |
Want a chat that isn't saved at all?
Use Temporary Chat. Temporary chats don't appear in history, don't create memories and aren't used for training, though OpenAI says they may be kept for up to 30 days for safety.
Business, Enterprise, Edu and API accounts are not used for training by default.
